Deterministic-Probabilistic Boundaries

Deterministic-probabilistic boundaries separate behaviour that must be implemented with explicit rules, typed code or transactions from behaviour that can tolerate model uncertainty. Good boundaries keep identity, permissions, accounting, compliance, irreversible actions and safety-critical checks deterministic, while using models for interpretation, drafting, ranking, summarisation or uncertain judgment where errors can be detected and corrected.

Why It Matters

The deterministic-probabilistic boundary decides which behaviour belongs in rules or conventional code and which can responsibly use a model.
