DevOps, Deployment and Observability

DevOps combines development, delivery and operations practices so software can be released reliably and recovered quickly. Deployment covers packaging, configuration, rollout, rollback and environment control. Observability provides telemetry that explains what the system is doing in production. AI systems extend this with prompt/model versions, retrieval traces, tool-call logs, cost metrics and safety events.

Why It Matters

DevOps and CI/CD automate build, test, evaluation, security checks and deployment. Model, prompt, retrieval and eval changes should pass controlled release gates.

Infrastructure and deployment cover environments, containers, compute, networking, scaling, resilience and rollback. Managed APIs, self-hosted models and hybrid setups have different operational burdens.

Observability uses logs, metrics and traces to understand system health and investigate incidents. AI traces extend observability into prompts, retrieval and tool decisions. Performance engineering measures and improves latency, throughput, resource use and cost under realistic load.

Failure mode

The recurring risk is treating this concept as a label rather than an engineering decision with trade-offs, evidence needs and operational consequences.
