Long-Lived Identity
Why It Matters
Section titled “Why It Matters”Long-lived agents may outlast individual model versions. If identity lives only in the neural network, each major model migration destroys the agent. A better design treats the foundation model as a replaceable cognitive substrate while continuity is carried by the harness: role, commitments, memory, relationship history, behavioral policies, skills and authorized capabilities.
Identity should be layered. Constitutional identity contains stable purpose, core role, safety principles and non-negotiable boundaries. Slowly evolving identity contains communication style, domain specialization, relationship norms and working methods. Rapid state contains the current task, local strategy and immediate conversational interpretation.
This is the stability-plasticity problem. Too little adaptation gives a generic system. Too much adaptation produces drift, role confusion or loss of commitments. The agent needs clear rules for what can change quickly, what can change slowly and what requires explicit governance.
